Dadd4 is constructed with the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th notes of the D Major scale

This Dadd4 shape doubles the 4th tone (G) and omits the 5th tone (A).  This is a very ambiguous shape that could also pass for a Gmaj7/D (no 3).

This very thick and tasty Dadd4add9 shape features the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 9th notes of the D Major scale.  It does omit the 5th (A).  Because of the presence of the 3rd (F#), the 2nd (E) is promoted to a 9.
